A Business Breakup Makeover

Bland, uninspired, and boring.

These aren’t words I would want anyone to use when it comes to describing my business… like EVER… let alone feeling bland, uninspired, and bored (B.U.B) in my physical place of work every single day. Barrfff!

Let me introduce you to one of my full Interior Design & Creative Direction clients, Dr. Tonya Loken. When I met Dr. Tonya last year she had just been through a business breakup and was experiencing a serious case of B.U.B when it came to her integrative medicine + wellness clinic based in Fargo, North Dakota.

As we all know, breakups of any kind are brutal, but before she let that breakup-induced case of B.U.B send her into an out-of-control tailspin that would lead to a really bad haircut + color and her looking in the mirror thinking “who are you and what have you done with my hair?” (we’ve all been there right?) we came up with a sparkly plan that would not only help her fall back in love with her business… but create a beautiful client experience.

So what was my anti-B.U.B post biz breakup prescription?
Dr. Tonya needed a jaw-dropping boss babe makeover – yes, a total rebrand + redesign of both her physical practice and online space.

Dr. Tonya knew without a doubt that she didn’t want her integrative health practice to feel like a spa or a sterile, stark hospital. She wanted her business to feel like walking into your besties home—where you’re comfortable enough to divulge only secrets you would tell your closest gal-pal over a steaming cup of tea, all while still having a totally profesh vibe.

Dr. Tonya empowers her patients to holistically take charge of their own health + wellness. Seeing Dr. Tonya in action I could tell that these women feel completely seen, deeply heard, and totally supported. I wanted to make sure that authentic connection and beauty was captured in her makeover.

After dreaming and scheming, it was time to put our two-phase sparkly plan into action. Today, I want to share phase one – transforming Dr. Tonya’s practice.

PHASE ONE: banish the blah builder beige

It was no wonder Dr. Tonya was feeling like her business was bland, uninspiring, and boring, her physical practice space was suffering from a case of the ‘builder beige’ blues and this was taking over the energy of the space.

Fargo, North Dakota is basically Canada – the winters are longgggg, cold, and often dreary – that means that natural daylight hours are precious.

In this situation, the color combined with the mismatched furniture (not in a cute way), and zero windows on the external walls limiting natural light, were only adding to the blah, gloomy vibes.

To fix that I suggested repainting the waiting area a crisp, bright white – this would help bounce around any natural light we could capture and just overall brighten the space. Other rooms that were already dark and moody, we leaned into making them even more dramatic and cozy.

Dr. Tonya also explained that their current reception desk was totally impractical and that she needed a better solution that would fit in a mildly challenging spot.

Now, if you’ve ever looked at buying commercial office furniture you will know it is more expensive than you would think – so to help keep us on budget I designed a new, functional but totally gorgeous reception desk based on IKEA furniture that we hacked and Dr. Tonya’s hubby cleverly brought this design to life!

There was one last thing to do before the ordering and install party could commence – an HGTV makeover style virtual walkthrough.

“Shelley obtained our office blueprints and was able to lay out everything from paint colors to furniture. We were able to visualize what the office space was going to look like and approve everything before moving forward. This was amazing!” – Dr. Tonya Loken

I love presenting this portion of the makeover, not only does it help my clients visualize where the design is going and what the finished product will look like, I find it helps to settle any nerves or fear of the unknown. Plus, it makes them feel like they are on their own makeover show!

Finally, it was time to wave my glitterwand – it was load-in and installation day. With my design plans on the front seat and my car loaded with decor, painting supplies, tools, and flat-pack furniture, I drove 13-hours from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Fargo, North Dakota – surviving a serious near miss – a car driving the wrong way down the Interstate at night…in the rain!

It was time to get to work!

After Dr. Tonya’s Practice Makeover

A doctor’s office doesn’t have to feel bland and boring, sterile, and so buttoned up you feel uncomfortable. Dr. Tonya’s practice makeover is proof:

“It was amazing to see how everything pulled together after months of hard work. Our patients LOVE the new office space and comment on how bright and cozy our lobby space is along with how inviting our consult rooms are now.” – Dr. Tonya Loken

Now the only B.U.B. in Dr. Tonya’s life is her totally adorable bubba, Harrison!

If you’re looking to feel inspired and re-energized in your home office, studio, or commercial space, hit me up, lovely lady. I have packages for both eDesign and Full Interior Design projects available.

    REVEAL: Zamore Nursery Project

A few years ago, a dear girlfriend of mine made me oh-so giddy when she hired me to do her makeup for both her engagement photos and wedding day. Seriously, it was such an honor!

So when the same friends and now first time parents-to-be, Ashley and Kherry Zamore from Houston, hired me to design and style a “not too kiddy, budget friendly, modern, comfortable, calming, somewhat gender neutral-ish” nursery for the impending arrival of their sweet baby girl – my heart burst again.

    Meet the Zamore Family

How were you feeling about the thought of transforming/making over your guest room to a nursery, before you hired Shelley?
We were feeling pretty overwhelmed and indecisive. We were clueless where to start – we had a lot of options and a blank slate..and the minute details kept making us go in a million directions!

Why did you decide to hire Shelley instead of someone else?
Besides being a dear friend, she has impecable taste – we loved what she did with her house in Baton Rouge. And she is truly a professional that polishes – we knew without a doubt that we would have a polished room in time for baby Abigail. Lol, just like an HGTV makeover episode, we knew her personality would make it that much more awesome!

What did you love about working with Shelley?
Shelley guided us through every step – from budget and color preferences, to stepping out of our comfort zone with big decisions. She also provided us a 3D rendering of the room, which totally eased our minds about how everything was going to look…and fit…before we even got started.

We now have a nursery for our gorgeous baby that makes us feel relaxed, serene, proud and excited! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!

Today I’m beyond excited to finally share the totally crush-worthy, Zamore Nursery Project!

I’m obsessed with how the Zamore’s space turned out – from the accent wall I painted, to the color palette, and all the little details in between. Here is how I transformed the Zamore’s guest room into a dreamy nursery for mum, dad, and baby.

A big tip for making over your space (or your closet for that matter), is to have a pretty plan…or as I like to say, a treasure map! The treasure map captures the mood of the room, colors, textures, and potential themes. While keeping you focused when it comes to shopping for your space! ;)

    Before & After

The space was previously a comfortable guest room sporting traditional builder beige walls, dark brown stained wood bathroom cabinet, and an eclectic arrangement of decor.

To keep costs down, we decided to paint an accent wall rather than hang wallpaper or install any other type of material. The irregular polka-dots were simply decals from Urban Walls that could easily be removed at a later date.

    Paint Colors

Sherwin Williams Knitting Needles – SW 7672
was the wall color I chose – it’s the perfect neutral toned, light grey. (and my go to grey color!!!)

Sherwin Williams Pure White – SW 7005
was the color I chose for the ceiling to give the illusion of a larger room

Sherwin Williams Peppercorn – SW 7674
was the darker color for the accent wall + bathroom cabinet

A quick tip for those of you with littles: a satin finish paint is much easier to clean than a standard matte/flat paint finish. It’s also more resilient to scuffs.

    Shop The Post

It was important that this room grow with baby Zamore. And should my clients decide to sell, we wanted to make sure this room could easily be pair down to appeal to many.

For that reason I decided that decals would be best for the polka dots – I found these irregular dots from Urban Walls. I love that they looked hand painted and not so perfect!

On another note, how cute are these pink sparkly high-top sneakers?! (a gift for my lovely clients babe when she is bigger) If only they came in my size!

Unfortunately our first choice of lamp wasn’t available – it was the same style with a blush base instead of the pictured lavender one.

Initially I was super disappointed because there was nothing similar within the clients budget that I could find to replicate the look. But when I found these gorgeous crib sheets, skirt and changing pad cover…I just knew it was a match made in heaven!

Originally I thought I’d repaint this once brown stained cabinet, white. Then I decided on the fly that it would look much better as the deep Sherwin Williams Peppercorn color, from the accent wall…and I wasn’t wrong.

I love the character this bought to the bathroom – the color really pulled the grey tones out of the bathroom tile and tied the original shower curtain in beautifully. I’m always making changes on the fly to get that perfect finish for my clients!

Repeating colors, textures, and/or themes is a great way to ensure continuity through your design.

In every one of my projects, I like to surprise my clients with a little something personal or meaningful to their situation. I had just the thing for the Zamore Nursery – a black and white print of Ashley & Kherry’s wedding day.

Littles love to see pictures of there family…and there is just something so special about mum and dad’s wedding photo.

Want to incorporate some photos into your room design – maybe a gallery wall – but the colors of your favorite photos, clash with your color palette? No problem, love. Simply print your photos in black and white! It always looks so chic!

Finally, the chartreuse, matte velvet drapes brought so much warmth and coziness to the Zamore Nursery, while pulling the green/mustard tones together from the gallery wall art piece, crib skirt and changing pad cover.

We hung these curtains as high as possible to make the ceiling height look taller…and ensured the hem brushed the carpet. Check out the below before and after…crazy how much more space it feels like there is, right?!

      OMG We Built A House
      Whimsical Guest Bedroom Makeover

Read all the way to the bottom for details about my next 2017 confetti tossing announcement!

      “OMG, we’re coming over!”

These 4 little words make me want to throw my hands in the air and squeal in delight, just like a One Direction fan-girl.

But in the past, that initial shot of excitement + bliss was quickly followed by a chaser of panic.

My guest bedroom was desperately crying out for some sparkly love + attention. To describe it as dorm room chic, would be a MASSIVE overstatement. It was always the last room in our house to receive any love… actually it was less love and more like, ‘that will do’ or ‘she’ll be right, mate!’.

The guest bedroom was as basic as basic comes. Long before minimalism was even a trend – it looked like a mish-mash of unstyled, uninspired, unintentional furniture, that was just there to fill a void and be somewhat functional.

It was also one of the first rooms visitors to our home would see, when we lived in Houston…so you bet the door hiding my home decor shame was always shut.

      Well not anymore!!!

Today I’m inviting you to take a peek at my…

      Whimsical Guest Bedroom Makeover!

Check out the video above for my design and styling process.

Here’s what our new guest bedroom looked like before the design + styling party began.

So fresh and bright, with 12ft ceilings…a beautiful neutral, blank canvas.

      The Dreamy Vision

If you and I have been besties for a little while, then you’ll already know how much I adore Pinterest for sleuthing your style.

Pinterest is a wonderful website/app/tool to help you zero in on exactly how you want to feel in your style…and in my space. Having said that, I probably don’t pin images that you’d typically expect when gathering inspiration for my space….or my style for that matter.

In this instance (my whimsical guest bedroom makeover) I pinned textures that gave me goosebumps, fabrics that made me swoon, and colors that had me oohing and aahhhing when applied together.

I also pinned twinkling, enchanted, fairies and florals – even a kitty looking so sweet bundled up in a cozy blanket. Because, who doesn’t wanna feel like that?! Ok, maybe if you hate cats (how are we even friends?! Just kidding!), but seriously…I totes wanna feel like that! (And yes, I am aware that I’m two whiskers off being the eHarmony “just want cats in a basket with lil’ bow-ties”, gal!)

Once I’ve finished pinning images that speak to my heart + sparkly soul, I create my Intentional Style Map (a shopping guide) and start gathering all the piece and items that will make up my room. Rugs, doona (quilt) covers, blinds or drapes first, then the smaller, stylized elements that really transform your space.

Before I begin the room install, something I really love to do for my visual mind and to help me declutter my thoughts, is to roughly sketch out what my finished room will look.

This act of picking up a sharp 2B pencil and blank sketch pad, helps me work though any potential kinks in my plan and helps to unblock me creatively.

Hubby and I had decided that we didn’t want to invest in a headboard for our ensemble just yet. And even though I have some totally swoon-worthy DIY solutions, there was just one small problem…TIME!
So I turned to my sketch pad with the hope of unlocking an uber sparkly, stylish and creative design solution…

      And that’s exactly what happened.

      Hello enchanted forest wall!!!
